Quick answer
For most people who plan to keep their car at least a few years, yes. A ceramic coating with us starts at $495, lasts years instead of months, and makes pollen, brine, and road grime much easier to wash off. It's not worth it if the clear coat is already failing, if you're selling the car soon, or if what you really want is protection from rock chips. That's a job for PPF.
Ceramic coating is one of the services we get asked about most, and one of the most oversold in the detailing world. You'll see claims that it's "scratch-proof" or lasts "a lifetime." Neither is true. Here's what a coating actually does, what it costs around Charlotte, and how to tell if it's worth it for your car.
What a Ceramic Coating Actually Does
A ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to your clear coat and hardens into a thin, glassy layer. Once it cures, it does three things really well:
- Adds gloss. The paint looks deeper and wetter, especially on dark colors.
- Repels water and dirt. Water beads up and sheets off, and grime has a harder time sticking.
- Makes washing easier. Pollen, brine, bugs, and bird droppings come off with a lot less work.
What a Ceramic Coating Won't Do
- It won't stop rock chips. That takes paint protection film, which we start installing in January 2027.
- It won't make the car scratch-proof. A dirty mitt or a brush car wash can still put swirls in it.
- It won't fix swirls or scratches already in the paint. Those have to be polished out first.
- It won't save paint that's peeling or failing. Once the clear coat is gone, the fix is a repaint.
- It doesn't mean you never wash the car. It means washing is faster and easier.
If a detailer promises any of those, be careful.
How Much Does Ceramic Coating Cost in Charlotte?
With us, a ceramic coating starts at $495 for any size vehicle. That covers the wash, decontamination, a polish to prep the paint, and the coating itself. The final price depends on the size of the vehicle and how much correction the paint needs.
If the paint has heavy swirls or scratches, we quote paint correction first. Paint correction starts at $495 for a sedan, $595 for a small SUV or midsize truck, and $995 for a 3-row SUV, full-size truck, or van. You can see every service side by side in our Charlotte detailing price guide.

Ceramic Coating vs. Wax: Is It Worth the Extra Money?
A wash and wax with us runs $145 to $295, and the wax or ceramic sealant lasts a few months. Most daily drivers need two or three a year to stay protected. A ceramic coating costs more up front but lasts years, so over a few years of owning the car the math gets close, and you get more gloss and easier washes the whole time.
If you only want to spend a little, a wash and wax is a great choice. If you want the paint protected and you hate washing, the coating usually wins. We go deeper in wax vs. ceramic sealant vs. ceramic coating vs. PPF.
Who Should Get a Ceramic Coating?
It's usually worth it if:
- You plan to keep the car at least a few years
- The car is new, or the paint is in good shape (or you're getting it corrected)
- The car lives outside and deals with pollen, sap, and brine
- You want washing to be quick, whether you do it yourself or have us do a premium hand wash
- Your paint is dark and shows every bit of dust
It's probably not worth it if:
- You're selling or trading the car in the next few months
- The clear coat is peeling or badly faded
- You run it through a brush car wash every week and don't plan to stop
- Your main worry is rock chips on the highway. Look at PPF instead.

How to Make a Ceramic Coating Last
- Hand wash it every two to four weeks with a gentle car soap, and more often during pollen season. Here's how to wash pollen off without scratching the paint.
- Skip brush car washes. The brushes and harsh soaps wear a coating down.
- Rinse off bird droppings and tree sap as soon as you see them.
- Keep it dry for the first day or two, and hold off on washing for about a week after it goes on.
- Rinse brine off the lower panels after winter storms. More in our winter car care guide.
Why Fall Is a Good Time to Coat Your Car
Coatings need dry conditions to cure, so we plan around rain and like a garage or covered spot when there is one. Fall in Charlotte usually brings plenty of dry days, and a coating that goes on now is already working when the road brine shows up in winter and the pollen hits in spring.
