Quick answer

Foggy headlights are plastic lenses that have oxidized from years of sun. In AAA's testing, clouded headlights put out as little as 20% of the light of new ones. In winter, when it's dark before most people leave work, that's a real safety problem. Restoring them costs $95 a pair with us and is the right move unless there's moisture or damage inside the housing. Then replacement is the fix.

Most people don't notice their headlights getting dim. It happens slowly, over years, and you get used to it. Then winter comes, you're driving home in the dark every night, and the road ahead looks a lot darker than it should.

Why Foggy Headlights Matter More in Winter

In Charlotte, the earliest sunset of the year is around 5:10 p.m. in early December, per WeatherSpark. For most people, the whole evening commute happens in the dark, often in cold rain. That's exactly when you need every bit of light your headlights can put out.

Cloudy lenses cost you a lot of it. In AAA's headlight testing, clouded and yellowed lenses produced only about 20% of the light of new headlights. The haze also scatters the light, which means more glare for oncoming drivers.

What Makes Headlights Turn Yellow?

Modern headlight lenses are plastic, not glass. From the factory, they have a protective layer on the outside. Years of UV light from the sun break that layer down. Once it fails, the plastic oxidizes, and you get the yellow, cloudy, sometimes crusty look. Cars that sit outside all day in the Carolina sun get there faster.

Sometimes the haze is on the inside of the lens, or there's moisture inside the housing. Restoring the outside won't fix that, so send us a photo first and we'll tell you honestly.

Restore or Replace?

Restoring means removing the damaged outer layer, polishing the lens clear, and protecting it from the sun so it stays that way. With us it's $95 a pair, done right in your driveway, and it usually takes about an hour.

Replacing means buying new headlight assemblies. In AAA's testing, new factory replacements brought light output all the way back, while restoration brought it back to about 70%. The catch is cost: on a lot of newer cars, a single factory headlight assembly can run hundreds of dollars before installation.

Restore them if:

  • The haze or yellowing is on the outside of the lens
  • The inside of the housing is dry
  • You want clearer lights for a fraction of the cost of new ones

Replace them if:

  • There's water or fog inside the housing
  • The lens is cracked or chipped through
  • The bulbs or LEDs inside are damaged

Do DIY Headlight Kits Work?

They can help for a while. The problem is that most kits don't fully remove the damaged layer and don't leave lasting UV protection on the lens, so the yellow often comes back within months. A pro headlight restoration sands out all of the oxidation, polishes the lens clear, and protects it, so it lasts much longer than a kit.

How to Keep Headlights Clear After They're Restored

  • Park in the shade or a garage when you can. The sun is what causes it.
  • Keep them protected. A quick coat of ceramic sealant every month or two helps a lot.
  • Wash them when you wash the car, with a soft mitt, never a brush.
  • If the whole car is getting protected, a ceramic coating on the paint pairs well. More on that in wax vs. ceramic sealant vs. ceramic coating vs. PPF.

Foggy Headlights in Winter FAQs

How much does headlight restoration cost in Charlotte?

With us it's $95 a pair, done at your home or work. Add it to any other detail and we'll take some off the total.

How long does headlight restoration take?

Usually about an hour for a pair, depending on how bad the oxidation is.

How long will restored headlights stay clear?

Much longer than a kit, since the damaged layer is fully removed and the lens is protected. Sun exposure is the biggest factor, so garaged cars hold up best.

Will restoring my headlights help me see better at night?

Yes. Clearing the haze lets more light through the lens, so the road ahead is noticeably brighter.

Can every headlight be restored?

Not always. If there's damage or moisture inside the housing, restoring the outside won't fix it. Send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly.

Does toothpaste work on foggy headlights?

It can take off a little haze for a few weeks, since it's a mild abrasive, but it doesn't remove the damaged layer or protect the lens, so the yellow comes right back.

Do you take the headlights off the car?

No. Everything is done with the headlights on the car. We just tape off the paint around them.

What else can you do while you're here?

Anything on our list. Common add-ons are a full interior detail, mini interior detail, paint correction, or engine cleaning. We also do paint overspray removal. Smoke odor removal, window tint, and paint protection film all start in January 2027.
